The Silicon Valley Center for Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity (CAIC) has played a pivotal role in hosting and supporting a diverse array of past events and activities focused on enhancing education and research in critical fields. By collaborating with Silicon Valley companies, the CAIC has fostered a strong network of expertise, driving innovation and leadership in big data, cybersecurity and beyond.
NICE Conference
The NICE Conference is an annual convening of community members and thought leaders from education, government, industry and nonprofits to explore ways of developing a skilled cybersecurity workforce ready to meet the challenges of the future. The event provides an opportunity to signal NICE strategic directions and priorities, and a forum to showcase best practices. This event is supported by the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE), a program of the National Institute of Standards and Technology in the U.S. Department of Commerce, under a Cooperative Agreement (Award# 70NANB18H025).

Presentation: Cybersecurity Community Service Learning: A train-the-trainer approach
Presenters: Alan Wong and Lynida Chang (菠菜网lol正规平台) and Michael Chang (Trend Micro)
菠菜网lol正规平台 and TrendMicro, in partnership with San José Public Library, jointly launched a training class "Learn Cybersecurity with Minecraft" targeting 3rd-5th graders. The class exposes elementary school students to cybersecurity concepts with high school and college students as teachers. In addition to developing a deeper appreciation of cybersecurity concepts through a train-the-trainer exercise, these teacher-learners grow the knowledge of the field by being trained by practitioners from TrendMicro. Young talents, from non-traditional underrepresented backgrounds, connect well with this service-learning arrangement, that serves their own local communities. The presenters highlighted this partnership among academic, government and industry entities.

Presentation: “Promoting Cybersecurity via Local and International Partnerships”
The 10th Annual NICE Conference was held on November 18-22 in Phoenix, AZ. SVCGS, in partnership with Silicon Valley Big Data & Cybersecurity Center, highlighted the partnership effort in promoting cybersecurity here and beyond. One of our partners, Hong Kong Electronics and Technologies Association co-presented at the conference session the Innovate For Future STEM competition. The talk included 菠菜网lol正规平台's partnership with industry (IBM, Trend Micro, Optortun, Splunk, Lockheed Martin etc.), school districts (through CyberSpartans), California higher education through CyberAware Day (UC Merced/Ohlone College), municipalities through non profit (Adaptable Security) and other global partners.

CyberAware Day
CyberAware Day is a unique event hosted in partnership between UC Merced and San José State University to raise awareness around the cyber security sector and related opportunities for students of all backgrounds. Students had opportunities to interact directly with like-minded companies who know the value of diversity.

The event kicked off with a welcome from Mayor Matt and City Manager Jennifer Maguire, and feature distinguished subject matter experts and City leaders, including FBI agent Elvis Chan, U.S Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) advisor Scott Alford, San José Chief Information Officer Khaled Tawfik, and San José Digital Privacy Officer Albert Gehami, and more to discuss the following topics: Protecting our City Together: Cybersecurity Strategy and Collaboration; Inclusivity in Cybersecurity: Education and Keeping your Businesses and Home Safe; and Recent Breaches in USA and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
CAIC Co-Director Tonia San Nicolas-Rocca moderated a session titled Protecting our City Together: Cybersecurity Strategy & Collaboration.

Notable CAIC Activities
- Department of Homeland Security - Cyber Student Volunteer Initiative

The Cyber Student Volunteer Initiative (CSVI) was designed to give students an opportunity to work alongside cyber leaders with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). CSVI offers summer opportunities to current undergraduate and graduate students. The nationwide program provided students the chance to gain invaluable hands-on cyber experience through challenging work projects, real-life scenarios and mentoring from DHS cybersecurity professionals. This initiative provided a way for the Department to expand the pipeline of future cyber talent which is needed to execute the unique cybersecurity missions at DHS Component. Interns had the opportunity to apply concepts, protocols and tools acquired through coursework in the real world by working side by side with experts in cybersecurity. Student assignments focused on mission areas such as identification and analysis of malicious code, forensics analysis, incident handling, intrusion detection and prevention, and software assurance.

On August 22, 2016, the Center submitted a $1.9 million grant proposal to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The proposal was titled A Multidisciplinary Graduate Degree Training Program in Cybersecurity.

- Information Security Student Club

In 2013, 菠菜网lol正规平台 established an Information Security student club. Club members participate in planning and executing the events/programs. They are also active in the Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (CCDC), Uber CPTC Penetration Testing Competition and other enrichment activities.

Dr. David C. Anastasiu, Assistant Professor of Computer Engineering Department, received the Best Research Paper Award and Next Generation Data Scientist Award (NGDS) at IEEE International Conference on Data Science and Advanced Analytics (DSAA) held on October 17-19, 2016. The NGDS award is given to full-time research students and early-career researchers who conduct foundational research and innovative applied work in data science and advanced analytics.

San José State University hosted the 2014 US Cyber Challenge CyberQuests Preparatory Day Camps. Results from online CyberQuest competitions were used to select candidates for admittance into the prestigious US Cyber Challenge Western Regional Cyber Security Camp to be held at 菠菜网lol正规平台 in August 2014.

- Women's Institute in Summer Enrichment

菠菜网lol正规平台 hosted Women's Institute in Summer Enrichment (WISE) 2013. WISE was a one-week residential summer program at NSF STC TRUST's 菠菜网lol正规平台 campus that brought together graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and professors from all disciplines that were interested in Ubiquitous Secure Technology and the social, political and economical ramifications that are associated with this technology. Thought leaders from academia, industry and government come to WISE to teach power courses in several disciplines, including computer science, engineering, economics, law and public policy. The one-week program allowed participants to explore opportunities for career development and to network with their peers.
